Licensed Clinical Psychologist in Dallas Providing Individual & Couples Therapy

Behavioral and Mental Health Therapist in Dallas, Plano, TX - Amanda Moates, Ph.D., PLLC

If you’re like many of the individuals and couples I work with, you may be feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or disconnected – from yourself, from your partner, or from the life you want to be living.

You may be struggling with stress, anxiety, or self-doubt that feels impossible to shake. You might be feeling the painful distance growing between you and the person you love most. Or maybe you’re simply feeling adrift, longing for deeper fulfillment, connection, and purpose, but unsure how to move forward.

Together, we can work to identify the patterns holding you back and create meaningful, lasting change that helps you step into the life you want.

My Approach

Whether I’m working with individuals or couples, my approach is relational and collaborative, meaning I place great value on building a strong therapeutic relationship with you.

I have extensive experience treating adults dealing with depression, anxiety, interpersonal problems, trauma, grief, and major life transitions.

I’m also passionate about helping couples learn to strengthen their relationships, care for each other’s vulnerabilities, communicate effectively, become more resilient, and connect in a truly authentic, loving manner.

I am a Level II PACT (Psychobiological Approach to Couples Therapy) therapist, which means I’ve completed hundreds of hours of in-person training with Dr. Stan Tatkin, as well as ongoing consultation and webinars. PACT is an experiential, attachment-based, and neuroscience-informed approach that helps couples move beyond surface-level issues to explore, work through, and resolve the root of their relational patterns.

My Professional Background

I earned my Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center and my undergraduate degree in psychology is from Northwestern University.

Before returning to graduate school, I worked for several years at the Maryland Psychiatric Research Center in Catonsville, MD, where I was a research assistant and clinical case manager. The team there investigates biological and genetic factors in schizophrenia and provides clinical care for people with serious mental illness. Publications related to research with the MPRC can be found here, and research from my time at UT Southwestern can be found here.

My Ph.D. from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center included an APA-accredited internship with over 2,000 supervised clinical hours completed at the UT Southwestern Psychotherapy Clinic, Parkland Outpatient Psychiatry Service, Zale Lipshy Hospital Inpatient Psychiatry Unit, and SMU’s Counseling and Psychiatric Services. In addition, I had the opportunity to complete a rotation in the Parkland Memorial Hospital Psychiatric Emergency Room.

I also completed my post-doctoral training at UT Southwestern, again working with patients with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder and evaluating and treating prospective bariatric surgery patients in the Department of General Surgery.

Following the completion of my post-doctoral training I joined the faculty of the Department of Psychiatry and enjoyed seeing therapy patients in the UT Southwestern Adult Outpatient Psychiatry Clinic until I left to focus on my private practice.
